Friday rain made tech inspection a rather soggy event. But race day started out cold and dry with the temps working their way up to the upper 50s. The dry track allowed some super fast lap times by the Not Banned Yet v6 powered Nissan 240sx with local hot shoe Wyatt Foster at the helm. The 240 led early but succumbed to a failing oiling system on the newly rebuilt Nissan v6.
The RVA Graphics and Wraps Audi TT finally put down some quick laps but ended up with an unknown failure which may or may not have been caused by a money shift. Their EC-classed BMW lost a gearbox a bit later on.
The Parts Badger Mazda Miata made an early mistake with the driver failing to make the turn one right-hander and smacking pretty hard into the outside wall. They were able to get the car back out 6 laps down from the leader, but damage to the left front effectively ended their weekend at the front of the pack.
Another race favorite was last years winner Pinkies Out BMW e30, who got caught up in a 3 car event that caused the Chris Huggins and Danger Racing owned BMW to acquire some damage to the left rear suspension that took a long time in the paddock to fix. That made the rest of the day a test day as they sorted out setting for the upcoming championship race at Charlotte.
At the end of the day, it was the always fast A-Class 1994 Acura Integra of Where’s John taking the overall win with the D-Class Racing for Heroes packed with military veterans, 6 laps back in their 1984 Chevrolet Camaro. This was their highest ever finish, and the excitement was clearly on everyone’s face when they accepted their well-earned trophies.
The Chandler Shcool award went to the team of the Racing for Heroes team. They also brought out a 1987 Chevy Corsica which was loaded with new, never raced before USAF, Army, and Marine drivers. They showed that working as a team, you can take a team of new drivers with the slowest car in the field, and finish a very respectable 25th place in a 48 car field. These guys never gave up.
This race had 5 never-raced with ChampCar teams entered, with a couple of teams with zero track experience.
