Around Town - Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park / Thompson, Connecticut

Welcome to Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park, one of the oldest continuously operating race facilities in the United States. Located in northeastern Connecticut near the Massachusetts and Rhode Island borders, Thompson offers a classic New England race weekend with easy access to hotels, restaurants, fuel, and supplies.

  • Track Address: 205 E Thompson Road, Thompson, CT 06277
  • Closest Towns: Thompson, Putnam, and Webster, Massachusetts
  • Fuel & Supplies: Gas stations, grocery stores, pharmacies, and general shopping are available within 10–20 minutes of the track.
  • Auto Parts: AutoZone, NAPA, O’Reilly, and Advance Auto Parts locations can be found in nearby Putnam, Webster, and surrounding communities.
  • Food: Plenty of quick food options, pizza, diners, coffee shops, and local New England favorites are close by. Putnam has several solid local restaurant choices for teams looking to escape paddock food for a night.
  • Hotels: Teams typically stay in Putnam, Webster, Auburn, or Worcester depending on budget and how far they want to drive.
  • Airport Access: Providence (PVD), Hartford (BDL), and Boston Logan (BOS) are all viable airport options depending on travel plans.
  • Entertainment: Historic Putnam has a walkable downtown with restaurants, pubs, and coffee shops if your crew wants a break from race prep.
  • Weather Tip: New England weather can change quickly. Cool mornings, warm afternoons, and surprise rain are all part of the experience, so pack accordingly.

Local Note: Thompson has that old-school grassroots racing feel that fits ChampCar perfectly. Stock up before arriving, keep an eye on the weather, and enjoy one of the most unique stops on the schedule.

Event Special Notices

ESN 1
Testing, tuning, brake bedding, high speed accelerations or braking will be limited to the track, and not allowed in the paddock or surround public roadways. Doing so could result in event expulsion with no fees returned.

Clothing / Shorts: Shorts are not permitted on pit lane (in hot pits) during racing events. Open toed shoes are not allowed on pit lane while the track is hot.

Timing, Scoring, and Live Stream

Standard ChampCar Rules

ATTENTION: All vehicles, drivers, and crew must meet the safety and equipment requirements of the 2026 BCCR. Stint maximum of 2 hours per driver with a minimum of 1 hour between stints.

NOTE: Testing, tuning, brake bedding, high speed accelerations or braking will be limited to the track, and not allowed in the paddock or surrounding public roadways. Doing so could result in event expulsion with no fees returned.

All fueling is to be completed on pitlane race day. Do not store fuel in the garages.

Race Car Tech Inspection: All teams will be required to do the Online Tech Form. The team captain will log in at https://champcar.org/register/login.php to complete the race car online tech form. The Team Captain will find a button link on the main login page. Three months before the race, the tab Submit a Tech Form will take you to an electronic form that looks just like the paper Tech Inspection form. Fill in the boxes at the top, then fill in or click on the listed point value items on your car. Save the form and you are done. At the track the Tech staff will simply check the required safety items on the car. Once the Tech staff clicks save on the safety portion of your online form, you will get your annual tech sticker and head to ChampCar registration.

Please verify your timing and scoring transponder and Flagtronics FT-200 serial numbers, and make certain to add your car class to the tech form.

Flagtronics FT200 Wireless Flagging Display: Limited quantities of units may be available to rent, with preference going to teams who request a rental online. Rental fee is $50 for the event. You may purchase your own FT200 unit at https://flagtronics.com/champcar.

Code35 will be in use at all ChampCar events. It is imperative that your FT200 unit and the GPS is mounted within the rules and that the unit is working.

Sound: Sound readings will take place throughout the weekend. All ChampCars are required to have mufflers, and not exceed 96dBa at 50ft.

Alcohol: Absolutely no alcohol may be consumed in the paddock during the day’s racing events. Alcohol may be consumed 30 minutes following the completion of on-track activity for the day.

Photo/Media Credentials: There will be a limit as to how many credentials are issued. Cut-off for event credentials is 2 weeks before event start. Please visit https://champcar.org/web/media.php.

Tech Line Requirements

  • Have all decals installed as per the BCCR. Get sponsor decal at tech.
  • Owned Flagtronics installed per BCCR and working. ChampCar will test at tech. Teams responsibility to have the correct firmware installed.
  • Owned Transponder installed and working. ChampCar will test at tech.
  • Flagtronics and Transponder rentals will be issued to teams at Tech.
  • All lights for night racing installed and working. They will be tested.
  • Electronic tech form completed.

$60.00 per day.
Garage spaces are 16' wide and approximately 30' deep.

Garages may be booked online up to 2 days in advance of the event. All remaining available stalls will be first come first serve on site the day of the event at the registration building.

Cancellations must be made at least 2 days before the event in order to receive a refund.

Fueling is not permitted in the garage area at any time. All fuel cans must be left outside the garage at all times - regardless of whether full or not.

7am the front gates will open. Sign the track waivers at the front gate.

Late Thursday night arrivals can park to the left of the driveway at the front gate.

The traffic flow in the paddock is counter clockwise. In other words, when traveling in the garage area the building should stay to the driver's left. In addition, cords may not run across the travel lane during on track activity. Cords being run while the track is cold must be covered by a yellow jacket cable protector.

The lights on either side of the bridge allowing ingress and egress to the paddock are on a timer. The lights will change approximately every 90 seconds, and must by obeyed.

No pit lane electric.

Limited lighting in the paddock

Closed toed shoes are required in all areas of the paddock. Shorts are not permitted on pit lane (in hot pits) during racing events. Shorts are never permitted on corner stations. Open toed shoes are not allowed on pit lane or at corner stations while the track is hot.

All guests over the bridge must be ChampCar Weekend Members - $20

Children under the age of sixteen (16) must be accompanied by an adult while in the paddocks. For their safety and that of others, children must be kept under adult supervision at all times.
Children under the age of sixteen (16) are not permitted to drive golf carts or operate any other motorized vehicles at TSMP. This applies to all golf carts, whether used from TSMP or privately owned.

Persons under eighteen (18) years of age are not permitted in the hot pits or at corner stations.

TSMP allows pets at its events; however all pets must be leashed and cleaned up after.

There is no cost for camping at the event; they do not have any hookups and do not have a dumping station. (There is a campground close by that does)

Subject to change due to fire season. No open campfires or barrel fires are allowed. Only contained, manufactured barbeques and grills are permitted. BBQ’s are allowed in the camping area only, provided all BBQ’s are supervised at all times, a fire extinguisher is within 15’ of the open flame, and all open flames are (at a minimum) 20’ from all race cars, fuel storage or other flammable sources.

Restrooms are in the club house. Showers are available over by the grandstand restrooms, over the bridge.

The trailer will be open from 7:30 am to 4 pm on Friday and 7:30 am to 7 pm on Saturday. There was also a major renovation to the golf clubhouse across the parking lot and can handle much more business.

Drones are not allowed at ChampCar events.
Aerial photography, or the taking of photographs or video by individuals from an elevated position in which the camera is not supported by a ground-based structure, such as remote controlled fixed-wing or multi-rotor Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) drones, balloons, blimps and dirigibles, rockets, kites, parachutes, stand alone telescoping and vehicle mounted poles, either triggered remotely or automatically is prohibited at TSMP. Violators in possession and/or operation at any time will be subject to confiscation of their unmanned aircraft, immediate removal from the property, and further prosecution by Law Enforcement.

This year (2026) we do not need everyone over the bridge by 10 am. I am keeping security staff overnight so people can leave in the morning if they would like. Also, they can stay in the paddock on Friday night as well.

Alcoholic beverages are permitted in the paddocks and pits fifteen (15) minutes after on-track activity has ceased for the day and until 10:00 pm. TSMP has the right to suspend driving privileges for any driver found to be out of compliance.

Quiet time on TSMP grounds is between 10pm and 7am.

The use of non-golf cart personal paddock vehicles (i.e. ATV) are allowed in the paddock only. Golf carts may be operated anywhere on the facility. Common sense and care must be exercised and applied to the use of such vehicles. Personal powered vehicles including skates, skateboards, razor scooters, mini­bikes and similar devices are NOT permitted in the paddock.

The starting of race/unmuffled engines prior to these times is expressly forbidden and violators may be subject to immediate removal from EVENT. At no times may vehicle noises be in violation of TSMP's 103 dB limit. (At 50 ft from moving vehicle).
