2020-01-05 - Electrical Kill switch location

Q:
We’re converting a race car for Champ car duty. The kill switch is located on the passenger side of the roll cage. Can we leave the switch there as long as there is a pull cable a belted in driver can reach?

A:
This is covered in section 3.14 of the rules. The master kill switch needs to be located in the center of the dash console area. You can mount another switch in series there. We want all our cars to be alike so emergency crews can reach the switch from either side in any situation. A pull cable there would be hard for a safety worker to determine how or what function it is for. If you want to run a remote cable there, it needs to be hooked to a rotational knob that looks and functions just like a kill switch and is clearly labeled to the off position.
