ChampCar Tech Desk

The tech desk is used to ask technical questions and is not to be used as a post race tech line or to phish for how others built their cars. Please reference the BCCR as most questions submitted to the TechDesk can be answered by reading the BCCR. You can download the BCCR here: https://champcar.org/web/rules.php
VPI requests require the year, make, model, trim level, engine size, engine HP, Drive type (FWD, RWD, AWD, 4x4), auto or manual transmission, car weight, and all options. Your request will not be answered if you do not include all of that information. You must use http://www.automobile-catalog.com for all of your information submitted. Include the link to the automobile catalog so we can quickly reference the data. If your car is not listed on that website, please link any website that has the info. If you do not include your research info above, your request will be denied.

2020-01-05 - Patching floor for roll cage

Q.
We had to patch a rust hole in the floor where the main roll cage hoop box will mount. Is this considered safety-related for the cage? Or accounted for material used?

A.
This is covered in BCCR 4.7.6 in the rules. (BCCR 2020v1)

4.7.6. Teams may replace any worn, broken, ventilated, impaled, defective, or bent-beyond-all- recognition parts on their car without affecting their total points so long as it’s an OEM or OEM- equivalent part for that car’s specific model.

4.7.6.1. Teams may repair/replace rusted/fatigued/damaged portions of the chassis with similar thickness metal or OE-approved repair components/methods. Repairs must maintain some likeness to the original body lines of the
chassis.

Now the patch cannot be used as the base plate for the cage roll hoop. We would like the base plate or plinth box to extend beyond the patch for added strength
