ChampCar Tech Desk

Official channel for ChampCar technical questions, interpretations, and VPI requests.

Before you submit a ticket

The Tech Desk is for rules clarifications and technical questions. It is not a post race tech line, a place to protest results, or a place to fish for how other teams built their cars.

Most questions can be answered by reviewing the current BCCR Rulebook. Please read the applicable section before submitting a ticket.

If your question is already covered clearly in the BCCR, your ticket may simply be answered with a reference to the rulebook section.

VPI request checklist

For all Vehicle Performance Index (VPI) requests you must include:

  • Year, make, model, and trim level
  • Engine size and engine horsepower
  • Drive type: FWD, RWD, AWD, or 4x4
  • Transmission type: automatic or manual
  • Car weight and all factory options that affect performance
  • A link to the vehicle on automobile-catalog.com or another site with full specifications if it is not listed there

Requests that do not include all required info and research will be denied without review.

2023-02-25 - Aftermarket Non OE Cylinder Head and Valve Train

Q:
If you take a cylinder head swap off the VPI list on a OHC engine you acquire the cams and valve train.
If an aftermarket head like Brodix trick flow was purchased on a V8 engine you can claim roller rockers and other valve train.

If an aftermarket casting for an over head cam engine in this case Honda is available are any cams and valve train included in the head swap?

A:
A billet head swap does not include valve train and it has to be added.
If swapping factory offerings the rockers and springs come with

I ran this through the TAC and although factory overhead cam head swap includes cam and valvetrain we cannot do the same for an aftermarket billet head. The cams have to match original to the engine for no additional point add.

I know this is not in the rules but it's kinda new stuff coming out. It is the feeling allowing this would lead to + $$$$$ and that is not the direction we want to go.
Sorry it took so long to get back with you but it takes time to go through the process.

Summary:
Cam in block engine:
Aftermarket cylinder head swap = No pushrods, rockers, Valvetrain components included
OE cylinder head swap from another vehicle on vpi list = OE pushrods, rockers, valvetrain from head being swapped included in head swap points

Overhead cam engine:
Aftermarket cylinder head swap = No cam(s), rockers, valvetrain components included
OE cylinder head swap from another vehicle on vpi list = OE cam(s), rockers, valvetrain from head being swapped included in head swap points
